In this article we’re going to break down everything you need to know about 2-step verification. From what it is to how to enable it so that you can always be in command of your digital assets. By adding an extra layer of security, you are able to ensure that you are always in control. Let’s get into it.
What Is 2-Step Verification
In this digital day and age you can never be too cautious when it comes to protecting your data. That’s why, here at Oobit, we’ve incorporated 2-step verification, also referred to as 2FA (2 factor authorisation) which adds an extra layer of protection on top of your username and password logins. 2FA is in place for you to verify your identity, and involves the process of entering a verification code sent to one of your devices, usually triggered when signing in from an unknown device, or when looking to send crypto from your account.
We use the following authentication options, which you will verify when creating an account:
- SMS Authentication
- Email Authentication
Additionally, we recommend using an extra layer of security, through a third party authentication app:
- TOTP Authenticators
What Is TOTP?
TOTP stands for Time-based One Time Password and is the software mechanism that two-factor authentication apps use to generate temporary security codes. We recommend adding 2FA to your account, which is done through a third part TOTP app. In the process of setting up your 2FA, we’ll guide you through finding and installing a TOTP app.
How To Set Up Your 2FA On Oobit
Once you are logged in and have verified your phone number and email address, head to the Settings page and click on Password and Security. Select the edit (pencil) icon next to Two-Step Verification (as below).
Next, you’ll be greeted with a Secret Key which you should copy and store in a secure location (Oobit will never ask you for this code), as well as a QR code.
You will need to download an authenticator app. Go to the App Store on your device and search for authenticator apps. Find an app that you trust, through ratings and reviews and download the one best suited to you. We can recommend 2FA Authenticator, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator as options, there are obviously many more.
Once you’ve downloaded the app, scan the QR code given to you (as per the picture above). This will automatically generate a 6 digit code, which you will need to enter in the box provided. Once you have entered the code, click Enable. Note that these codes expire quickly, and new codes will be generated until you activate one.
Once you have set up your 2FA you will see a list of Device History, indicating your most recent logins. You’re all set to go!
Verified Security
What is 2-Step Verification, also known as 2FA? They’re extra layers of security put in place to protect your digital assets from bad actors. Everytime you make a payment or sign up from an unknown device, you will need to open the app and add the code, signalling to Oobit’s security that you are who you say you are.
